History of Marietta Gardeners Club
he Marietta Men's Garden Club was organized in March 1941 with 29 charter members. In 1948, the Marietta Men's Garden Club (MMGC) issued a charter affiliating us with the Men's Garden Club of America, Inc. MMGC was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in November 1985. In 2000, the club changed its name to Marietta Gardeners Club (MGC) and officially became a co-ed garden club.
From 1942 until 2018 the MMGC/MGC has maintained the Alice Birney Memorial Rose Garden at the old Marietta High School (now Marietta Middle School). This garden was dedicated in 1942 honoring the founder of the Parents-Teachers Association. In 2018 the club transferred the care of the Birney Rose Garden to another garden club. The Marietta Gardeners Club decided to increase the time they devote to grounds of the Marietta Educational Garden Center.
In 1969 the Marietta Men's Garden Club had a major role in the formation of the Marietta Educational Garden Center. Our members cleared away all of the
undergrowth and debris from the grounds while the other clubs concentrated on restoring the house. We are indeed fortunate to continue to have our meetings at the Garden Center. We
will continue to support the Garden Center and its importance to our community.
The club has been self-sustaining with the main source of income coming from our annual plant sale (Saturday before Mother's Day in May) and our plant
auction. In 2022 we will not hold our plant sale due to corona virus, but will have our plant auction at our May meeting. Visitors are welcome to attend the auction.
In 2009, the club voted to withdraw from the Garden Clubs of America (TGOA) and re-affiliate with the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. This was a difficult decision because we have always been a part of the national organization. Many of our past presidents had been active in the Regional TGOA and also the National TGOA. However, we felt that our goals centered on local and state issues, and our club members would be better served with our renewed affiliation with the state organization.
We are proud of the heritage of the Marietta Men's Garden Club and we are equally proud of our present club. We are the only co-ed garden club in Cobb County and our meetings are open to all. Our club welcomes any gardener who wants to expand their knowledge of gardening. We are fortunate that many of our members are master gardeners and life long gardeners who share their expertise with fellow club members.
